Best Mowing Height for Summer Heat in New Jersey

Why Mowing Height Matters in Summer
When temperatures climb and rainfall becomes unpredictable, your lawn enters a period of stress. During this time, scalping the grass or keeping it too short can cause serious damage, including:
-
Shallow root growth
-
Faster moisture loss
-
Greater vulnerability to weed growth
-
Increased chance of heat damage or browning and disease
Instead, we recommend raising the mowing height to a minimum of 3.5–4 inches — especially for cool-season grasses common in our area like tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial rye.

๐ฑ 4 Benefits of Taller Grass in Summer
1. Deeper Root Systems
Longer grass blades mean more photosynthesis, which fuels stronger root growth. That’s what helps your lawn stay green and bounce back after heat waves or droughts.
2. Shade at the Soil Surface
Taller grass naturally shades the root zone, keeping the soil cooler and reducing water evaporation. That means you get more out of every watering.
3. Less Stress from Mowing
Mowing too low during summer sun and heat stresses turf. Raising the height helps reduce shock, especially during hot spells.
4. Natural Weed Suppression
Thick, tall turf crowds out invaders like crabgrass and nutsedge, which thrive in stressed, thin lawns.
๐ What’s the Right Height for My Lawn?
For most lawns in Skillman, Belle Mead, Princeton, and surrounding areas, we’re currently mowing at a minimum of 3.5 to 4 inches during summer. Some lawns, depending on the soil and turf types are being mowed in excess of 4.5 inches!
If you're mowing your own lawn:
-
Stick to the 1/3 Rule: Never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade at once.
-
Keep your mower blades sharp to avoid fraying.
Pro Tip: Mowing Right Can Reduce Your Water Bill
Healthy, tall grass holds onto moisture longer. When combined with early morning watering, this simple change can improve drought resistance and even help you water less frequently.
Green Valley’s Approach
We adjust mowing heights seasonally — it’s just one of the ways we care for your lawn as if it were our own. If your lawn is still looking great in late June, these small shifts will help it stay strong through July and August.
If you're noticing thinning spots or early browning, don’t panic. Let us know — we can help assess whether your lawn needs a moisture boost, a treatment tweak, or just a little summer patience.
