Freshly Seeded Lawn

 What is Core Aeration?

Core aeration is a lawn care process that involves removing small plugs from the soil to improve your lawn's health. Here's how:

  1. Improves Soil Structure: Aeration reduces soil compaction, improving root growth and water absorption.

  2. Enhances Nutrient Uptake: By opening up the soil, aeration allows fertilizers and other nutrients to reach the roots more effectively.

  3. Reduces Thatch: Aeration helps break down thatch, a layer of organic matter that can inhibit water and nutrient absorption.

 What is Overseeding?

Overseeding involves spreading grass seed over an existing lawn to improve its density and overall health. Here’s why overseeding is particularly beneficial:

  1. Fills in Bare Spots and Improves Lawn Density: Overseeding addresses thin or bare patches from summer heat by introducing new grass seeds that create a fuller, denser lawn better equipped to outcompete weeds.

  2. Increases Heat and Drought Resistance: Overseeding introduces newer grass types that better handle the environmental conditions in Skillman and the surrounding areas, offering improved resistance to heat and drought.

  3. Enhances Disease Resistance: These cool-season grass varieties are designed to have better resistance to common lawn diseases, contributing to a more resilient lawn overall.

Our High-Quality Seed Blends

At Green Valley, we use a certified Performance Blend to overseed lawns, featuring the finest varieties available to promote a lush, durable, and beautiful turf.

  1. Performance Blend: High-Quality Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass

    • Tall Fescue: Known for its drought resistance and ability to thrive in sunny and shaded areas, its deep root system makes it exceptionally hardy. Tall Fescue offers more durability than ryegrass, providing a more robust lawn that withstands summer heat and drought conditions common in Somerset and Mercer Counties.
    • Kentucky Bluegrass: Renowned for its fine texture and rich color, Kentucky Bluegrass offers excellent disease resistance and recovery abilities. It is well-suited for the cooler temperatures of Zone 7 and blends seamlessly with Tall Fescue to create a lush, uniform lawn. Unlike ryegrass, it establishes a dense network of rhizomatous roots that improves overall turf resilience.

While we use the best quality seed blends, it's important to note that no turf is 100% drought and disease-proof since it is a living organism with essential needs. The best approach is to be proactive in using best cultural practices to minimize stress and provide your lawn with the best chance against stressful conditions like heat, drought, and disease.

Why Fall is the Optimal Time for Aeration and Overseeding

Fall offers ideal conditions for core aeration and overseeding:

  1. Cooler Air Temperatures: The cooler temperatures of fall are less stressful for newly seeded grass compared to the intense heat of summer. This allows seeds to germinate and establish more effectively without the risk of overheating.

  2. Warmer Soil Temperatures: Soil temperatures often lag behind air temperatures, especially in spring and fall, due to the soil's ability to retain heat. This lingering warmth from the summer creates an ideal environment for germinating seeds, as it promotes faster germination.
  3. Increased Moisture: Fall typically brings more frequent rainfall, which helps with seed germination and root development.

  4. Optimal Growing Conditions: The combination of cooler temperatures, warm soil, and increased moisture creates perfect conditions for grass growth.

How to Successfully Implement Core Aeration and /or Overseeding

To ensure the best results from core aeration and overseeding, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare Your Lawn: Mow your grass to a height of 3-3.5 inches. Adjust this height based on weather conditions and your turf type. This helps the aerator penetrate the soil more effectively and ensures seeds make good contact with the soil.

  2. Perform Core Aeration: Pre-flag any obstacles like irrigation heads that could potentially be damaged by the aerator's metal tines. This preparation helps minimize the risk of damage, but keep in mind it may not always be 100% effective. Exercise caution and inspect your lawn for any potential obstacles before beginning.

For optimal results, aim to cover your entire lawn evenly. If you’re planning to overseed, making at least two (2) passes with the aerator is a good rule of thumb.

Why is this important? Seed germinates best in these core holes, so the more holes you create, the better your results will be. However, there's a sweet spot to consider. Generally, 2-3 passes are ideal.

  3. Overseed Your Lawn: After aerating, spread the grass seed evenly over your lawn using a broadcast or drop spreader. Follow the recommended seeding rate for your grass type.

  4. Water Properly: Keep the soil consistently moist until the grass seeds germinate and establish. Avoid heavy watering that could lead to runoff or puddling. Instead, opt for more light, frequent watering to support seed germination. Once the seed has germinated, you can start reducing the frequency of watering, but it is very important not to let the young grass seed dry out.
