Why Is There Yellow Grass Growing Taller Than the Rest of My Lawn?

Yellow Nutsedge
🌾 What Is Nutsedge?
Nutsedge (also called nutgrass) is a weed, but it’s not a grass. It’s a fast-growing sedge that thrives in moist, compacted, or poorly drained areas of your lawn. The blades are:
-
Bright yellow-green (lighter than your turf)
-
Glossy and triangular in shape
-
Stiff and upright — they don’t blend in
-
Grow faster than your lawn and shoot up again just days after mowing
It often shows up in low-lying spots, shady areas, or where irrigation or rainwater sits a little too long.
Is It Crabgrass?
No — crabgrass and nutsedge look and behave very differently.
| Trait | Nutsedge | Crabgrass |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Bright yellow-green | Medium to dark green |
| Growth habit | Tall and upright | Low and wide-spreading |
| Shape | Sharp, pointed, triangular blades | Flat, wide blades with “fingers” |
| Growth speed | Grows very fast after mowing | Slower to regrow once cut |
| Control | Needs special treatment | Can often be managed with pre-emergent |
Why Is It So Hard to Get Rid Of?
Nutsedge spreads underground by tubers (nutlets), and pulling it by hand usually makes it worse. Most big-box store weed products won’t touch it, and even some lawn companies don’t treat it unless requested.
That’s where we come in.
How Green Valley Controls Nutsedge
We use a selective, post-emergent herbicide specifically designed to target sedges without damaging your lawn. This isn’t a “spray everything and hope for the best” approach — we treat nutsedge on-site, during your visit, when conditions are right.
Got nutsedge in a few areas? Let us know and we’ll flag it for treatment — or include it in your next service if you're already a lawn care customer.
Don’t Wait — Nutsedge Spreads Fast
The longer nutsedge grows, the more tubers it drops in your soil for next year. Getting ahead of it now can save you from a bigger mess next season.
